Clinton Gubong Gassi defended his thesis for the PhD in Economics, on 8-November-2024, entitled “Multiple approaches to analysing the selection of a committee”, directed by Mostapha Diss & Issofa Moyouwou.

Abstract: This thesis falls within the framework of social choice theory and focuses specifically on voting situations where the goal is to select a group of alternatives or candidates from a larger set, based on the preferences of a group of voters. This type of voting situation is known in social choice theory as ‘‘committee selection’’. In the first chapter of the thesis, we focus the basic case where the goal is to select a single alternative. In this chapter, we highlight the undeniable link between two well-known concepts in social choice theory, namely the majoritarian compromise rule and the notion of social acceptability. In the second chapter, we explore the more general framework of selecting a committee of any size, greater than 1. We address this issue by incorporating a crucial parameter in this context: the diversity constraint. We then propose a family of committee selection rules with a diversity constraint and study the properties of these rules. In the third chapter, we analyze the loss of excellence induced by the diversity constraint on the selected committee and examine how this varies from one rule to another, allowing for a qualitative comparison between different voting rules. Finally, in the fourth and last chapter, we address the issue of selecting a committee by incorporating another criterion, that of the compatibility of the selected committee members. We then propose a method to integrate the compatibility criterion into any classical scoring rule, in order to achieve a compromise between excellence and compatibility.

Every year, the University of Franche-Comté hosts an artist-in-residence in a research laboratory. Through the Science, Arts and Culture Department, a visual artist is invited to immerse himself in the life of a research laboratory and discover the work being carried out there. Over a period of several weeks, the artist will develop his or her research and creative work in close contact with lecturers, technical staff and students.

The UN ARTISTE | UN LABO scheme encourages exchange, collaboration and the cross-fertilization of approaches, skills and knowledge, supporting artistic creation and its dissemination to a wide audience. The “arts-sciences” projects that emanate from it aim to enable everyone to enrich themselves while exercising a critical eye, and thus participate in the evolution of our societies.

Céline Notheaux (personal website), who won the call for applications, will be in residence at CRESE for the academic year 2024-2025.

Léa Munich defended her thesis for the PhD in Economics, on 1-October-2024, in Nancy, on the subject: “Cooperative game theory serve company: common costs sharing”, directed by Yannick Gabuthy (Univ. Lorraine, BETA) & Sylvain Béal (CRESE)

Jury : Pierre Dehez (UC Louvain), Francis Bloch (Univ. Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne- Rapporteur), Agnieszka Rusinowska (CNRS, Univ. Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne), & Claire Borsenberger (La Poste Group).

Abstract : The modern economy is characterized by growth of the number of major companies with multiple activities and infrastructures. The activity of these companies is often regulated and requires a subtle allocation of costs between business entities. Cooperative game theory will be used to optimize common costs sharing. On the one hand, a positive approach will be achieved. The aim is to model the cost-sharing situations and the constraints on professional activity. On the other hand, a normative approach will be achieved. The aim is to provide and study solutions to problems of cost-sharing and network access pricing.

Alexis Roussel defended his thesis for the PhD in Economics, on 27-september-2024, entitled “Analysis of medical choice in shortage circumstances”, directed by Mostapha Diss & Marc Deschamps.

Abstract: The global epidemic of COVID-19 has led to shortages on an unprecedented scale throughout the world. The economic consequences of these resource shortages in the hospital environment have dramatic consequences for the care of patients in need. In this thesis, we propose to study three probabilistic temporal models, both theoretically and numerically, dealing with the allocation of respirators in intensive care units, the calculation of the average care time given to a patient according to the available nursing workforce, and finally the overall social welfare of patients according to hospital capacity.
